Kyrgyz Republic
Geography and History
The Kyrgyz Republic is a landlocked country in Central Asia covering
some 199,900 square kilometres and was formerly part of the USSR.
It borders Kazakhstan to the north, China to the east, Uzbekistan
to the west and Tajikistan to the south. Approximately 94% of the
country is over 1,000 metres above sea level and about 40% is over
3,000 metres above sea level.
The Kyrgyz Republic gained independence
in 1991 from the Soviet Union.
